It is with great sadness that we have learnt about the death of Professor Willy Aastrup who passed away in Aarhus on 14 January aged 71.
Since 1999, Prof. Willy Aastrup supported the Jagiellonian University in its efforts to open up to the needs of persons with disabilities. He advised Ireneusz Białek in his role of JU Disability Support Officer and then assisted in the building of the Disability Support Service (DSS) team, hosting and training its members at the Counselling and Support Centre of Aarhus University. Set up by Prof. Aastrup, it was one of the most important European centres of philosophical though and practical activity championing equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.
Jagiellonian University staff were successively joined by other enthusiasts of the notion from other higher education institutions which set up their own units in charge of accessibility, drawing on the knowledge and experience of Professor Aastrup and his team. The impact of that remarkable person on what has been achieved in the area of inclusive education in Poland was invaluable. To recognise the fact, a chapter composed of disability and accessibility officers from Cracow-based universities passed a unanimous decision in 2014 to award Prof. Willy Aastrup its main Integralia prize.
We bid farewell to you, our Master and Friend. We shall always remember you.
